A recovering alcoholic's wife often accused him of becoming a real penny pincher ever since he sobered up. When one of his sponsees was approaching a year of sobriety, he took his wife with him to the local AA central office to find a recovery-related gift for the fellow. The wife showed him a subscription card to 'The Grapevine' monthly magazine. "That's a little too much," he said. "How about this CD with audio recovery stories? It's just over $10," his wife suggested. The alcoholic still squirmed, so his wife found a copy of 'The Best of Bill' priced at $8. The fellow piped up, "Can't you ever choose something cheap?" His wife shot back: "I married you, didn't I?"

But once I was educated about it, I realized I was an alcoholic. So I got help... It only becomes a struggle when you don't treat it like it's serious... If you have a kidney problem and need dialysis four times a week, you're going to go. Well, alcoholism is just as deadly as that, but it's patient and it can sneak up on you.
