Wishing You a Sober and Happy New Year, One Day at a Time

daily quota: Resolutions; Daily Event; Optimist & Pessimist; Drunkenness

"Every New Year people make resolutions to change aspects of themselves they believe are negative. The majority of people revert back to how they were before and feel like failures. This year I challenge you to a new resolution. I challenge you to just be yourself."
- Aisha Elderwyn

"I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me."
- Anais Nin

"An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves."
- Bill Vaughan

"This drunkenness culminates on New Year's Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you're married to."
- PJ O'Rourke

daily quota: Susan Sontag

Susan Sontag, the novelist, essayist, critic and human rights activist, passed away Tuesday at the age of 71 due to complications from leukemia.

Sontag defined herself as an obsessed aesthete and moralist. As such, and even though I personally disagreed with some of her controversial views, she gave me many pauses for thought about my own views on art and life.

More to the topic of addiction and recovery, her mother was an alcoholic and she lost her father when 5-years-old -- she sadly described her childhood as "a terrible waste of time" and "one long prison sentence."

Susan Sontag Quotes:

"What we need is to use what we have."

"It is not the position, but the disposition."

"Lying is the most simple form of self-defence."

"The only interesting answers are those that destroy the questions."

"A large part of the popularity and persuasiveness of psychology comes from its being a sublimated spiritualism: a secular, ostensibly scientific way of affirming the primacy of 'spirit' over matter."

"Most people in this society who aren't actively mad are, at best, reformed or potential lunatics."

"I envy paranoids; they actually feel people are paying attention to them."

Christmas Present
A drunk was telling his wife the big plans he had for Christmas this year. In the middle of his spiel the wife interrupted him, "You can say what you want, but I know that you'll (Yule?) spend Christmas like a present!" The drunk was baffled, "I don't get it. What do you mean, like a present?" The wife explained: "As always, come Christmas Eve you'll tie one-on , pass out, and spend the night under the tree."

Knowing that the bartender was a cheap guy, she didn't believe him. But the drunk insisted he could prove it. He shouted across the bar to the bartender, "Excuse me again my good man, but this barmaid doesn't believe me. How many did you say?" The bartender shouted back to the waitress: "It's true Luv, two pints."
