today's quota: Ray Bradbury on Life and Living

- A Collection of Ray Bradbury Quotes -

Letting Go: "Make sure you have all the information, whether it's aesthetic, scientific, mathematical, I don't care what it is. Then you walk away from it and let it ferment. You ignore it and pretend you don't care. Next thing you know, the answer comes."

The Self: "We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out."

Life: "What is the function of mankind amidst the vast universe? To witness and celebrate! Look upon the Creator, the stunning terror of it all, and celebrate - otherwise, why are we here? What's the use of a universe that exists but is not seen? Your job is to see, to appreciate... to work, improve yourself, improve the world. We represent the flesh of the Godhead, and we are beholden to the gift!"

Problems: "You solve problems not by thinking directly of them but allowing them to ferment in their own time."

The Future: "People ask me to predict the future, when all I want to do is prevent it. Better yet, build it. Predicting the future is much too easy, anyway. You look at the people around you, the street you stand on, the visible air you breathe, and predict more of the same. To hell with more. I want better."

Creativity: "You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you."

Adventure: "Stuff your eyes with wonder... live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask no guarantees, ask for no security, there never was such an animal. And if there were, it would be related to the great sloth which hangs upside down in a tree all day every day, sleeping its life away."

Taking Risks: "Go to the edge of the cliff and jump off. Build your wings on the way down."

today's quota: Addiction & TV

"Don't call me an alcoholic because I'll snap, and cry, and you'll feel like an ass!"
- From the TV series, 'The Real World'

"Who are people going to believe, an ex-alcoholic or a guy who's been lucid 24/7 his whole life?"
- From the TV series, 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'

TV & Movie Star:
"There are drugs that expand the soul [?] but cocaine is one that just closes the heart. It's a very alone, horrible sort of shrinking drug. I quit on my own, but there was a time when I feared I would have to go in for treatment. I really was in trouble."

Recovery After The Hurricane

Show Your Soul
"One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it."
- Clarissa Pinkola Estes quote

From our AA Family in Louisiana....

Subject: Help for AA Katrina victims

Hello from Baton Rouge AA Central Office.

We are desperately seeking donations to purchase AA big books and 12x12's to bring to the shelters here, not only in Baton Rouge, which are filled to capacity, but to the other areas we service that have set up shelters. If you would like to make a monetary contribution, the soft cover Big Books are $6 with tax and the soft cover 12x12's are $6.50 with tax. I will put you a return receipt in the mail.

Thanks to the generosity of the AA community all over the United States. We have had calls from California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland and areas in our precious state that have power, to offer their homes to fellow AA members, to offer literature, AA meetings, clothes, their time, you name it! Thanks Bill and Dr. Bob and all our friends for the hand of AA that know no boundaries!

You may reach us at 225-924-0030 during the weekend. We have real AA people answering the phones, but if you can't reach us, our phones are tied up with many important calls, so keep trying or should I say trudging!

Our address is:
Baton Rouge AA Central Office, 8312 Florida Blvd. Suite 213-A, Baton Rouge, La. 70806

Again, words cannot express our thanks to each and every one of you!

Hurricane Healing Prayer from Author Vicky Thompson
Heavenly God of light, my heart is saddened by the recent tragedies on the Gulf Coast. Hidden within the pain generated by the devastating hurricane, I recognize nature’s power, which is your energy of creation. I ask that this powerful force of nature, this creational energy, be used to heal the hearts of human beings here on Earth as well as the souls who have returned to your embrace. May your light of love lead these souls home. May the light of truth heal all wounds, repair all broken commitments, and restore all hearts anew with peace. May grace flow abundantly upon all in the coming days. Amen.

More from Vicky Thompson

Many thanks to Michele for writing and asking for info about AA after the hurricane...

quipping post: True Story and All in the Mind

True story, told by the driver at his first AA meeting...
A man goes to a party and has too much to drink. His friends plead with him to let them take him home. He says no - he only lives a mile away.
About five blocks from the party, the police pull him over for weaving and ask him to get out of the car and walk the line. Just as he starts, the police radio blares out a notice of a robbery taking place in a house just a block away. The police tell the party animal to stay put, they will be right back and they hop a fence and run down the street to the robbery.
The guy waits and waits and finally decides to drive home. When he gets there, he tells his wife he is going to bed, and to tell anyone who might come looking for him that he has the flu and has been in bed all day. A few hours later the police knock on the door. They ask if Mr Smith is there and his wife says yes. They ask to see him and she replies that he is in bed with the flu and has been so all day.
The police have his driver's license. They ask to see his car and she asks why. They insist on seeing his car, so she takes them to the garage. She opens the door.
There, sitting in the garage, is the police car, with all its lights still flashing.
